From Spiritual Blindness to Spiritual Understanding

Before, I thought I understood God, but I was spiritually blind and could not truly understand Him. It was only when the Holy Spirit came into my life through Jesus Christ that my spiritual eyes were opened. In this blog, I want to share how God changed my understanding, revealed His truth to me, and transformed my life through His grace.

It is important for us to have the Holy Spirit within us because that is how we are able to understand spiritual truths, since God is Spirit. That is why a person who is spiritually dead cannot truly understand spiritual things. This was exactly what happened to me before—I was not aware of what God was doing in my life, and I did not truly know who God really was or fully understand Him.

JOHN 4:24 (NLT)

For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

1 CORINTHIANS 2:14 (NLT)

But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.

1 CORINTHIANS 2:15-16 (NLT)

15 Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. 16 For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.

The same thing happened to the disciples and followers of Jesus. At first, they did not understand the meaning of the things Jesus was saying to them. They only fully realized and understood everything after Jesus was glorified.

JOHN 12:16 (NLT)

His disciples didn’t understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him.

The same thing happened in my own life. I was spiritually blind to the things of God until the Holy Spirit came into my life through Jesus Christ, and my spiritual eyes were opened. It was then that I realized that during those moments when I used to pray before going to sleep and say, “Lord, I want to follow You. Please guide me in Your way,” God truly heard my prayers.

Looking back now, I realize that everything that happened in my life had a purpose. While I was preparing to study for my nursing board exam, I came across a Bible instead. I opened it and began reading it. Then God began connecting everything in my life. He used people around me, especially my friends. Sometimes we would message each other and share Bible verses. Later, one of my friends met a Christian friend and introduced me to her. When I attended their church, God convicted me of my sins. I remember being so shocked because while the pastor was preaching the Word, it felt like he was speaking directly to me. I almost wanted to hide beneath my chair because I felt ashamed, wondering how he seemed to know the sins I had committed during that time.

That Christian friend also reached out to me and asked about my relationship with God. She even sent me a Bible, until eventually I encountered God personally 🥹 Hallelujah 🙌🏻 I was deeply touched when I realized all of these things because, at that time, I truly had no idea that God was working in my life.

Then I remembered watching The Passion of the Christ when I was still in college. While watching it, I cried because I felt pity for Jesus Christ. I even said to myself, “Lord, those people will surely face judgment for what they did to You.”

But when I already had a relationship with God, He reminded me of that moment when I cried while watching The Passion of the Christ. He opened my spiritual eyes and changed my understanding. He made me realize that instead of crying for Him, I should have been crying for myself because of sin. That was when He made me understand that I needed Jesus in my life so that I could be saved and understand the truth about His Kingdom and His glory.

God also reminded me of another moment when I cried after seeing how Satan deceives and misleads people, especially when I saw people blaming one another over the life of a woman I saw on Facebook. God opened my spiritual eyes to see what Satan was doing to people, and that deeply moved me and brought me to tears. It was then that I began to understand what Jesus did on the Cross in order to save humanity.

LUKE 23:28 (NLT)

But Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

Without the Holy Spirit, people cannot truly understand their life, their situation, or the deeper truth behind things. We keep complaining and blaming other people for our situation because we stay focused on our own perspective and listen to the opinions of others instead of listening to God. That is why we need a relationship with God, because it is through that relationship that God reveals truth to us. But the question is: Is Jesus truly in our hearts and lives?

Jesus is the One who gives rest, peace, and comfort that the world cannot give.

MATTHEW 11:28-30 (NLT)

28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

JOHN 14:27 (NLT)

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

The Holy Spirit is the One who teaches us, corrects us when we are wrong, comforts us, and reminds us of the Word of God. He changes our minds and hearts to become more like Jesus Christ, and our actions follow that transformation. That is what it means to become Christ-like.

Through the Holy Spirit, a person is transformed and begins to see the Kingdom of God and understand His mysteries from glory to glory. Because of this, we become even more amazed by God, and this is one of the reasons why we share the Good News about His grace.

This is also why I became a witness for Christ—why I cry with joy and also cry out of compassion for others. One of the reasons I share the Word of God is because of what God has revealed to me through the Holy Spirit.

The same was true in Paul’s experience through what the Holy Spirit revealed to him. Paul spoke about being caught up to the third heaven and hearing things so astounding that they could not even be expressed in words. God also revealed His mysterious plan to Paul through the Holy Spirit, giving him spiritual understanding and insight concerning Christ. What was hidden from previous generations was now revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets.

2 CORINTHIANS 12:2-4 (NLT)

2 I was caught up to the third heaven fourteen years ago. Whether I was in my body or out of my body, I don’t know—only God knows. 3 Yes, only God knows whether I was in my body or outside my body. But I do know 4 that I was caught up to paradise and heard things so astounding that they cannot be expressed in words, things no human is allowed to tell.

EPHESIANS 3:1-5 (NLT)

3 When I think of all this, I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus for the benefit of you Gentiles. 2 assuming, by the way, that you know God gave me the special responsibility of extending his grace to you Gentiles. 3 As I briefly wrote earlier, God himself revealed his mysterious plan to me.4 As you read what I have written, you will understand my insight into this plan regarding Christ. 5 God did not reveal it to previous generations, but now by his Spirit he has revealed it to his holy apostles and prophets.

Aside from that, through the Holy Spirit, we are called children of God. Because of this, we are able to inherit the riches and glory of God. Wow, Hallelujah 🙌🏻

ROMANS 8:14 (NLT)

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

ROMANS 8:15 (NLT)

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”

ROMANS 8:16 (NLT)

For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.

As I reflect on everything God has shown me, I realize how spiritually blind I truly was before Jesus Christ opened my eyes through the Holy Spirit. Before, I could not fully understand God, His Word, or what He was doing in my life. But now I see how He was already working behind the scenes, patiently leading me closer to Him even when I was unaware of it.

Through the Holy Spirit, God changed my understanding, opened my heart to His truth, and helped me see life differently. The more I grow in my relationship with Him, the more I realize how deep, beautiful, and amazing His wisdom truly is.

I thank God because He did not give up on me while I was spiritually blind. Instead, through His grace and love, He revealed Himself to me through Jesus Christ and gave me spiritual understanding through the Holy Spirit.

I pray that whoever is reading this will also come to experience the truth, peace, and transformation that only God can give through His Holy Spirit.

This Is Not Religion—This Is a Relationship with God
