Many people think that following God is only about changing outward actions or becoming more religious. But true transformation begins deep within the heart. When the Holy Spirit starts working in a person’s life, their desires, mindset, actions, and way of life slowly begin to change.
Before I truly encountered God, I did not fully understand what it meant to be transformed by the Holy Spirit. I was living according to my own desires and the ways of the world. But everything began to change when I experienced speaking in tongues while I was still in Tagbilaran City in the Philippines. After returning to our hometown, I began experiencing God’s presence more deeply than ever before.
Whenever I played worship songs, I could feel the presence of God so strongly that I would freely worship Him around our home. As I continued reading the Bible, I also began to notice something that deeply amazed me—God was answering the questions and thoughts in my heart through Scripture. There were moments when the verses I read felt like direct answers to situations I was personally experiencing.
At first, I did not fully understand what was happening because no one had ever taught me that God could speak personally through His Word and through the Holy Spirit. But little by little, I realized that the Holy Spirit truly teaches, guides, reveals truth, and reminds believers of God’s Word.
As my relationship with God continued to grow, I also noticed that my desires began to change. The things I once enjoyed no longer attracted me in the same way. I no longer desired worldly entertainment the way I once did because my heart was slowly being drawn closer to God. I found myself wanting to spend more time worshiping, praying, reading Scripture, and pursuing the things that glorify Him.
That is one of the ways the Holy Spirit transforms a person’s life. God does not only change outward behavior—He changes the heart itself. He slowly removes desires that lead us away from Him and replaces them with desires that align with His will.
This reminded me of the moment when Jesus cleansed the temple. Jesus overturned the tables and drove out everything that did not belong in His Father’s house. In the same way, when the Holy Spirit lives within a believer, God begins cleansing the heart. Since believers themselves are now the temple of the Holy Spirit, God removes the things that are sinful, unhealthy, ungodly, or spiritually harmful. Then He teaches them how to live a life that honors Him.
True transformation happens from within. The old self slowly begins to die, and a new life in Christ begins to grow. The Holy Spirit changes the way a person thinks, speaks, desires, and lives. The things that once satisfied the flesh no longer bring the same kind of fulfillment because God is teaching believers to desire what is holy and pleasing to Him.
Being born again is not simply about having an emotional experience—it is about allowing God to continually transform your life. This process does not happen overnight, but day by day, the Holy Spirit teaches, corrects, convicts, comforts, and guides believers so they can become more like Jesus Christ.
Looking back on my journey, I now understand that true transformation is only possible through God. Human effort alone cannot completely change the heart. Only the Holy Spirit can truly transform and renew a person from the inside out. When the Holy Spirit truly lives within someone, their life will never remain the same because God continues shaping them into a new creation in Christ.
