From the very beginning of creation, God used nature to reveal spiritual truths. Even something as small as a seed carries a deeper spiritual meaning about growth, transformation, and relationship with God.
A seed does not instantly become fruitful the moment it is planted. Before growth becomes visible above the ground, a hidden process first takes place beneath the soil. The roots must first grow deeper before the plant becomes strong enough to bear fruit.
Spiritually, growth happens in the same way.
Many times, God is already working in a person’s life long before they fully recognize or understand what He is doing. There are seasons when the work of God remains hidden. Sometimes the seed of His Word is already planted in the heart, yet spiritual understanding has not fully developed. Only later, through a deeper relationship with God, does a person begin to recognize how God had been patiently working behind the scenes all along.
The Seed of God’s Word
Every spiritual journey begins with a seed—the Word of God planted in the human heart.
However, the growth of that seed depends greatly on the condition of the heart that receives it. Some hearts are soft and willing to receive God’s truth, while others are hardened and resistant.
Jesus explained this through the Parable of the Sower. The seed represents the Word of God, while the different kinds of soil represent the different conditions of people’s hearts.
Some hear the Word of God but do not understand it. Others receive it with joy but fail to develop deep spiritual roots. Some become distracted by worldly desires, worries, and the pursuit of wealth. Yet there are also hearts that truly receive and understand the Word of God, allowing it to grow and bear fruit.
Spiritual growth begins internally before it becomes visible externally.
God Often Works in Hidden Seasons
Just as a seed remains hidden beneath the soil before sprouting, God often works in hidden ways within a person’s life.
There are moments when people may not yet fully understand God, yet He is already planting seeds through:
• His Word
• testimonies
• correction
• conviction
• circumstances
• and different life experiences
Sometimes a person only realizes later that God had already been drawing them closer to Him for many years.
There are seasons when spiritual growth feels slow, invisible, or confusing. Yet hidden seasons do not mean God is absent. In many cases, God is preparing the heart deeply before visible transformation appears.
The Breaking Process Before Growth
Before a seed can grow, it must first break open.
Spiritually, God often allows a person to experience conviction, surrender, repentance, and spiritual awakening before transformation begins.
This breaking process exposes:
• pride
• sin
• self-will
• spiritual blindness
• and the true condition of the heart
When God opens a person’s spiritual eyes, they begin to understand their need for Him. The hardened heart slowly becomes softened through the Word of God.
Many people only fully recognize God’s work after their relationship with Him becomes deeper. Looking back, they begin to see how God had already been planting seeds and preparing them long before spiritual understanding fully came.
Deep Roots Produce Stability
Before a tree grows taller, its roots first grow deeper.
Spiritually, God develops deep roots through:
• prayer
• obedience
• studying His Word
• humility
• perseverance
• trials
• and dependence on Him
Without deep roots, faith can easily fall away during hardships, temptations, or persecution.
This is why spiritual growth takes time. God is not only concerned with outward appearance. He first develops strength within the heart.
Deep spiritual roots produce stability, maturity, discernment, and stronger faith.
Spiritual Fruit Reveals Transformation
A healthy tree eventually bears fruit.
In the same way, genuine spiritual growth eventually becomes visible through transformation in a person’s life.
The fruit of the Holy Spirit includes:
• love
• joy
• peace
• patience
• kindness
• goodness
• faithfulness
• gentleness
• and self-control
A spiritually mature life also reflects humility, compassion, obedience to God, and a desire to live according to His Word.
True spiritual fruit is not merely outward religious activity. It is the visible evidence of a transformed life that reflects the character of Jesus Christ.
A spiritually fruitful person becomes a blessing to others by:
• sharing the Word of God
• encouraging people
• helping others grow spiritually
• and reflecting Christ through their lifestyle
Spiritual Growth Requires Relationship With God
Just as a plant cannot survive without water, nourishment, sunlight, and care, spiritual growth is impossible apart from relationship with God.
People cannot grow spiritually by human effort alone. God is the One who plants, waters, nurtures, and causes spiritual growth within a person’s life.
Salvation is by the grace of God, not by human works. Yet genuine faith produces transformation and obedience. Faith without works is dead because true faith eventually becomes visible through the way a person lives.
Spiritual maturity is not instant. It is a lifelong process of growth through the Word of God.
Looking Back
Looking back, many people eventually realize that God had already been working in their lives long before they fully understood Him.
The hidden process of spiritual growth teaches that God works patiently within the human heart. Before spiritual fruit becomes visible outwardly, God first develops deeper roots internally.
Just like a seed planted beneath the soil, much of God’s work happens in hidden places first. Yet in His perfect timing, the seed begins to grow, mature, and eventually bear fruit.
From seed to fruit, every stage of spiritual growth has purpose.
And through His Word, God continues transforming lives for His glory.
