The Secret That Touches God’s Heart: Humility

Introduction

Many people desire to know God more deeply, but few realize that one of the greatest keys to experiencing His presence and understanding His heart is humility.

Throughout my walk with God, He has taught me many lessons through personal experiences, seasons of brokenness, and moments when His presence became very real to me. One of those moments came during a time of deep rejection and emotional pain. Through that experience, God not only healed my heart but also revealed something important about His own heart.

He showed me that humility is precious to Him. A humble, surrendered, and teachable heart deeply touches God’s heart. It is through humility that we draw closer to Him, receive His grace, and gain a deeper understanding of His wisdom and truth.

In this testimony, I want to share how God comforted me during one of the most painful seasons of my life and the powerful lesson He taught me about the kind of heart that pleases Him.

Part 1: God Meets Us in Our Brokenness

There was a time when I cried out to God because of the deep pain of rejection. I told Him, “Lord, it hurts so much to be rejected by someone you love.”

During that broken season, I experienced in a very real way how alive and powerful God’s Word truly is.

Psalm 34:18 (NLT)

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

As I poured out my heart before Him, I felt His presence draw near to me. Then God impressed something on my heart that deeply moved me. It was as if He said:

“Look at how much it hurts Me when people reject Me.”

The moment I sensed this, tears began to flow. For the first time, I understood that God has a heart that feels grief. He is not distant or emotionless. He loves people deeply, and it pains Him when they reject Him.

God reminded me of what happened in the days of Noah.

Genesis 6:5–8 (NLT)

The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” But Noah found favor with the Lord.

This passage reveals how humanity became exceedingly wicked and how it grieved God’s heart. Yet even in the midst of judgment, His mercy remained. Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Through this, God showed me how great His love and compassion are. Even when people reject Him, He continues to extend mercy and grace.

That experience made me realize that God is not merely a religious figure. He is personal. He is a faithful friend who remains near in our deepest moments of pain. As He comforted me, I also began to understand His own heart more deeply.

God brought healing to my brokenness. He healed the brokenness in my heart, my anxiety, depression, bitterness, and emotional wounds. It felt as though a veil had been lifted from my eyes, and I could once again see His glory. His presence became so real to me.

The more my relationship with God grew, the more real He became. That is when I truly understood that faith is not simply about religion—it is about having a genuine relationship with God.

Part 2: What Touches God’s Heart

One of the most important lessons God taught me is the value of humility.

Humility is one of the things that deeply touches the heart of God. To be humble means recognizing that we are sinners in need of His mercy, forgiveness, and transformation. It means acknowledging that He is God and that we are completely dependent upon Him. It is having a teachable heart that is willing to listen, learn, and receive correction.

Jesus illustrated this truth in the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector.

Luke 18:9–14 (NLT)

Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

The Pharisee trusted in his own righteousness and looked down on others. Although he fasted and gave faithfully, his pride prevented him from approaching God with the right heart.

The tax collector, however, humbled himself before God. He acknowledged his sin and cried out for mercy. Jesus said that it was the tax collector—not the Pharisee—who went home justified before God.

This teaches us that God is not impressed by religious performance when it is accompanied by pride. What moves His heart is genuine humility and sincere repentance.

When we surrender our pride, self-righteousness, and desire for recognition, we make room for God to transform us from the inside out.

Part 3: The Kingdom of God Is Different

The world teaches people to compete for status, success, recognition, and power. Many strive to become greater than others and to elevate themselves.

But the Kingdom of God operates differently.

In God’s Kingdom, greatness is found in humility.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NLT)

Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

God promises to hear, forgive, and restore those who humble themselves, pray, seek Him, and turn from their wicked ways.

Over the years, God has continually taught me how important it is to remain humble before Him. I have learned that the more humble we become, the more He is able to reveal His heart, His wisdom, and His truth to us.

Humility keeps our hearts teachable. It protects us from pride and helps us remain dependent upon God.

Whenever God reveals something to me, He continually reminds me to stay humble. Everything He entrusts to us is for His glory, not our own.

Part 4: The Danger of Pride

God also taught me why humility is so important.

Scripture teaches that pride led to Satan’s downfall. Wanting to exalt himself above God, he rebelled against the Lord and fell. This serves as a powerful reminder of the danger of pride and the importance of humility before God.

Whenever God entrusts us with gifts, revelations, knowledge, or responsibilities, we must remain humble and remember that everything comes from Him.

Humility protects our hearts from pride and keeps us aligned with God’s purposes.

Part 5: Childlike Faith and God’s Mysteries

Jesus taught that those who humble themselves like little children are great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 18:4 (NLT)

So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

A childlike heart is humble, trusting, dependent, and willing to learn. God delights in such hearts.

God also reveals His wisdom and truth to those who approach Him with humility.

Matthew 11:25 (NLT)

At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.

The Lord often reveals His truths not to those who rely on their own wisdom, but to those who come before Him with childlike faith and dependence.

The more we humble ourselves before God, the more receptive our hearts become to His wisdom, guidance, and the deeper truths He desires to reveal.

God does not reveal things so that we can glorify ourselves. Everything He reveals is meant to glorify Him alone.

Final Reflection

If you want to touch the heart of God, come before Him with humility.

If you desire to hear His voice more clearly, humble yourself before Him.

If you want to understand His wisdom, His mysteries, and His heart more deeply, humble yourself before Him.

God is close to the brokenhearted, and He gives grace to those who recognize their need for Him.

James 4:6 (NLT)

And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

The more we humble ourselves before God, the more receptive our hearts become to His wisdom, guidance, and the deeper truths He desires to reveal.

May we continually choose humility, surrender, and childlike faith as we walk with Him, remembering that every blessing, every revelation, and every good gift comes from Him and is ultimately for His glory alone.
