What Happens in the Spiritual Realm When We Pray: The Power of Prayer

Introduction

Prayer is one of the most powerful gifts God has given to His children, yet many people do not fully understand what happens when we pray.

Before I developed a relationship with God, my understanding of prayer was limited. I often prayed based on my own desires without realizing that God has a will and a purpose for everything. As my relationship with Him grew, God began to reveal truths that completely changed the way I viewed prayer.

Through His Word and through personal experiences, God taught me that prayer is much more than simply asking Him for what we want. He showed me the importance of aligning our prayers with His will, walking in humility, exercising faith, developing discernment, and trusting Him even when we do not immediately see answers to our prayers.

God also opened my eyes to the reality that there are things taking place in the spiritual realm that we cannot always see with our natural eyes. Although we may only see what is happening around us, there are often spiritual battles, divine interventions, and unseen works of God taking place behind the scenes.

Throughout this testimony, I will share some of the things God has taught me about prayer, spiritual warfare, discernment, and what can happen in the spiritual realm when God’s people pray.

My prayer is that this testimony will encourage you to seek God more deeply, trust Him more fully, and understand the incredible power of prayer.

Part 1: Praying According to God’s Will

Since I developed a relationship with God, I have come to realize that many of my prayers in the past were not aligned with His will. After God revealed this truth to me, the way I prayed began to change.

There was a time when I strongly desired a certain situation and wanted to pray for God to allow it. At that time, I was struggling with sin, yet I knew it was not God’s will because it did not align with His Word. For that reason, I chose not to pray for it. Even though I deeply desired it, God reminded me that it was not according to His will, so I did not bring it before Him in prayer.

Through this experience, God corrected my understanding and taught me that our prayers should align with His will and with what is written in His Word, the Bible. These are the things He promises to fulfill. When our prayers are aligned with His will, we can be confident that He hears us. The prayers of the righteous carry great power and produce wonderful results.

JOHN 9:31 (NLT)

We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.

JAMES 5:16 (NLT)

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

1 PETER 3:12 (NLT)

The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.”

At the same time, it is important to understand that not every answered prayer or granted request comes from God.

Satan also possesses power and can offer people what they desire if they choose to worship him. We see this clearly in the temptation of Jesus:

MATTHEW 4:8–11 (NLT)

8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”

10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.”

11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.

In this passage, Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory in exchange for worship. This gives us insight into why some people appear successful in every area of life even though they do not have a relationship with God.

Whenever temptation comes and says, “Do this,” “Follow this,” or “Worship this, and I will give you everything,” we must respond the way Jesus did. We must stand on the Word of God and declare:

“You must worship the Lord your God and serve only Him.”

The Word of God exposes the enemy’s lies and defeats temptation. Just as we read in verse 11, Satan left after Jesus rebuked him.

One of the blessings of having a relationship with God is discernment. Through discernment, we are able to recognize whether a thought, desire, impression, or influence comes from God or from the enemy.

Satan often works through situations and circumstances to draw people away from God. His methods are not always obvious. In many cases, people do not even realize they are being deceived.

This does not necessarily mean that someone is literally praying to Satan. Rather, the enemy subtly leads people to place their trust, dependence, or devotion in something other than God. What makes this deception so dangerous is that it often goes unnoticed by those who are spiritually blind.

Satan is extremely cunning. Unless God grants discernment, it can be difficult to recognize his schemes. However, when we walk closely with God and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us, He reveals the truth and helps us distinguish what is from Him and what is not.

For this reason, we must be careful about whom or what we call upon. Anything that takes God’s place in our hearts can gradually draw us away from Him. The enemy’s strategies are often subtle, which is why spiritual discernment is so important.

I remember that after completing my nursing studies, the next step was taking the nursing licensure examination. At that time, I did not yet have a relationship with God. Many people I knew would go to certain places and worship what they believed in, hoping their requests would be granted and that they would pass the examination.

Without a relationship with God and spiritual discernment, it is easy to be misled. We often follow what others believe and practice without questioning whether it aligns with God’s truth. This is why having a relationship with God is so important. He reveals His Kingdom to us and exposes the enemy’s deception.

There are countless situations in life where people are deceived without even realizing it. Yet through the Holy Spirit, God opens our eyes to the truth and helps us understand what is really happening.

Most importantly, God is Spirit, and He alone is worthy of our worship. We must know the truth so that the One we worship is truly God Himself.

JOHN 4:24 (NLT)

For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Part 2: The Holy Spirit’s Guidance and the Power of Prayer

There was a time when someone messaged me and shared that they were having a serious conflict with their partner. According to the message, the partner had threatened to take his own life and had driven away on his motorcycle at high speed.

After reading the message, I became concerned because I knew he might actually go through with it. I also understood how real spiritual warfare is and how Satan seeks to destroy lives. However, instead of allowing fear and worry to take over, God reminded me to pray.

Before I began praying, I heard what seemed to be the voice of the man who was the partner of the person who had messaged me. He was desperately crying out for help and calling my name. I could hear the pain and desperation in his voice.

At the same time, I received a vision. I saw him hanging from what appeared to be a cliff. He seemed to be on the verge of falling. Both of his hands were stretched upward as though he were desperately reaching out for help. He was crying intensely, and it seemed as though he could not hold on much longer.

Then I sensed the Holy Spirit prompting me to pray.

So I began praying in the Spirit. I spoke in tongues through the Holy Spirit—a language I did not understand, but one that God understood completely.

After I finished praying, I sensed these words in my spirit:

“He is safe now.”

Immediately, I felt peace and comfort. At that moment, I trusted that God had already intervened.

During prayer, I also had an understanding in my spirit that God had sent an angel to help him. Although I did not yet know exactly what had happened, I trusted what God had revealed to me.

Later, I contacted the man and asked what had happened. As we talked, he shared that he had come very close to taking his own life by intentionally crashing his motorcycle. However, at that exact moment, one of his friends suddenly arrived and asked if he could ride with him.

As he shared his testimony, God opened my spiritual eyes and helped me understand the meaning of the vision I had received during prayer.

The moment I saw him hanging from the cliff represented how close he was to taking his own life. Spiritually, he was standing at the edge of destruction.

When he later told me about his friend’s unexpected arrival, it confirmed what God had already revealed to me during prayer. I understood that God had sent an angel and used that friend as the means to intervene and save his life.

What appeared to be a simple interruption was actually God’s mercy at work.

From a natural perspective, many people might see it as nothing more than a coincidence. However, through the Holy Spirit, God revealed to me that there was much more happening behind the scenes than could be seen with natural eyes.

This experience taught me that there are realities in the spiritual realm that we cannot always see. Many events in our lives are connected to spiritual battles taking place beyond our natural understanding.

That is why having a relationship with God is so important. Through the Holy Spirit, He guides us, reveals truth to us, and helps us understand things that would otherwise remain hidden.

When God revealed these things to me, my heart was filled with gratitude and praise.

The Holy Spirit has truly become my best friend.

Part 3: What Happens in the Spiritual Realm When We Pray

After God revealed these things to me, He led me to a passage of Scripture that closely related to what He had shown me about prayer and the spiritual realm.

This passage demonstrates how powerful prayer can be and how God responds when His people pray earnestly.

ACTS 12:1–17 (NLT)

1 About that time King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church. 2 He had the apostle James (John’s brother) killed with a sword. 3 When Herod saw how much this pleased the Jewish people, he also arrested Peter. (This took place during the Passover celebration.) 4 Then he imprisoned him, placing him under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring Peter out for public trial after the Passover. 5 But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him.

6 The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate. 7 Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists. 8 Then the angel told him, “Get dressed and put on your sandals.” And he did. “Now put on your coat and follow me,” the angel ordered.

9 So Peter left the cell, following the angel. But all the time he thought it was a vision. He didn’t realize it was actually happening. 10 They passed the first and second guard posts and came to the iron gate leading to the city, and this opened for them all by itself. So they passed through and started walking down the street, and then the angel suddenly left him.

11 Peter finally came to his senses. “It’s really true!” he said. “The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what the Jewish leaders had planned to do to me!”

12 When he realized this, he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer. 13 He knocked at the door in the gate, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to open it. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed that, instead of opening the door, she ran back inside and told everyone, “Peter is standing at the door!”

15 “You’re out of your mind!” they said. When she insisted, they decided, “It must be his angel.”

16 Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking. When they finally opened the door and saw him, they were amazed. 17 He motioned for them to quiet down and told them how the Lord had led him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers what happened,” he said. And then he went to another place.

In this passage, we read that King Herod Agrippa began persecuting some of the believers. After seeing that the Jewish leaders were pleased with his actions, he arrested Peter and placed him in prison under heavy guard.

While Peter was imprisoned, the church prayed earnestly for him.

Although the believers could not see what was happening behind the scenes, God was already at work.

The Lord sent an angel to Peter while he was in prison. The angel woke him up, his chains fell off, and he was led safely out of the prison. Peter was eventually brought to safety and reunited with the believers who had been praying for him.

This passage reveals an important truth about prayer. What may seem impossible in the natural realm is not impossible for God.

The believers were praying, and while they were praying, God was moving on Peter’s behalf.

Many times, we only see what is happening in the physical world. We see difficult circumstances, suffering, persecution, and hardships. However, there are often spiritual realities taking place that remain hidden from our natural eyes.

The enemy seeks to destroy, oppress, and deceive people. Yet God is greater than every attack of the enemy and is able to rescue, protect, and deliver those who belong to Him.

Just as Peter was physically imprisoned, many people today are trapped in different forms of bondage. Some are imprisoned by fear, addiction, hopelessness, sin, depression, or deception. Others are struggling under spiritual oppression and attacks that they do not fully understand.

What we see outwardly is often only part of the story. Behind many situations, there is a spiritual battle taking place that cannot be seen with natural eyes.

This is why prayer is so important.

Prayer invites God’s intervention into situations that seem impossible. Through prayer, God strengthens, protects, guides, delivers, and reveals His will.

The story of Peter reminds us that God hears the prayers of His people. Even when circumstances appear hopeless, God is still at work.

The believers who were praying for Peter did not immediately see what God was doing. Yet while they were praying, God had already sent an angel to intervene on Peter’s behalf.

In the same way, there may be times when we do not immediately see answers to our prayers. However, that does not mean God is absent or inactive. He is often working behind the scenes in ways we cannot yet understand.

This passage teaches us to remain faithful in prayer and to trust that God is able to accomplish what seems impossible.

The God who delivered Peter is the same God who hears our prayers today.

Part 4: Daniel’s Vision and Spiritual Warfare

Another passage that helped me better understand what happens in the spiritual realm is the vision given to Daniel.

God used this passage to reveal important truths about prayer, humility, fasting, and spiritual warfare—things that often take place beyond what our natural eyes can see.

DANIEL 10:1–21 (NLT)

1 In the third year of the reign of King Cyrus of Persia, Daniel (also known as Belteshazzar) had another vision. He understood that the vision concerned events certain to happen in the future—times of war and great hardship.

2 When this vision came to me, I, Daniel, had been in mourning for three whole weeks. 3 All that time I had eaten no rich food. No meat or wine crossed my lips, and I used no fragrant lotions until those three weeks had passed.

4 On April 23, as I was standing on the bank of the great Tigris River, 5 I looked up and saw a man dressed in linen clothing, with a belt of pure gold around his waist. 6 His body looked like a precious gem. His face flashed like lightning, and his eyes flamed like torches. His arms and feet shone like polished bronze, and his voice roared like a vast multitude of people.

7 Only I, Daniel, saw this vision. The men with me saw nothing, but they were suddenly terrified and ran away to hide. 8 So I was left there all alone to see this amazing vision. My strength left me, my face grew deathly pale, and I felt very weak. 9 Then I heard the man speak, and when I heard the sound of his voice, I fainted and lay there with my face to the ground.

10 Just then a hand touched me and lifted me, still trembling, to my hands and knees. 11 And the man said to me, “Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you.” When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling.

12 Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.13 But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels, came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia. 14 Now I am here to explain what will happen to your people in the future, for this vision concerns a time yet to come.”

15 While he was speaking to me, I looked down at the ground, unable to say a word. 16 Then the one who looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing in front of me, “I am filled with anguish because of the vision I have seen, my lord, and I am very weak. 17 How can someone like me, your servant, talk to you, my lord? My strength is gone, and I can hardly breathe.”

18 Then the one who looked like a man touched me again, and I felt my strength returning.19 “Don’t be afraid,” he said, “for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!”

As he spoke these words to me, I suddenly felt stronger and said to him, “Please speak to me, my lord, for you have strengthened me.”

20 He replied, “Do you know why I have come? Soon I must return to fight against the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia, and after that the spirit prince of the kingdom of Greece will come. 21 Meanwhile, I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one helps me against these spirit princes except Michael, your spirit prince.

In this passage, Daniel received a vision concerning future events. The vision troubled him deeply, causing him to mourn and fast for three weeks.

During that time, Daniel humbled himself before God and prayed for understanding.

Afterward, God sent an angel to answer his prayer.

One of the most significant things the angel told Daniel was:

“Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven.”

This reveals an important truth: God heard Daniel’s prayer from the very first day.

However, the answer did not arrive immediately.

The angel explained that he had been delayed for twenty-one days because the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia had opposed him. Eventually, Michael, one of the archangels, came to help him so that he could continue his journey and deliver God’s message to Daniel.

This passage gives us a glimpse into the spiritual warfare taking place behind the scenes.

While Daniel was faithfully praying and fasting on earth, a spiritual battle was taking place that he could not see with his natural eyes.

Through this passage, we learn that God hears our prayers. Yet there are times when the answers do not arrive as quickly as we expect.

When this happens, many people become discouraged. Some begin to complain, lose hope, doubt God, or even question whether He has heard them at all.

Daniel’s experience teaches us that a delay does not necessarily mean that God has ignored our prayers.

God had already heard Daniel from the very beginning.

Another important lesson we learn from this passage is the importance of humility.

The angel specifically told Daniel that his prayer had been heard because he humbled himself before God and sought understanding.

A humble heart is precious to the Lord. Humility positions us to receive God’s guidance, wisdom, and revelation.

This is why we should always approach God with humility, surrender, and reverence whenever we pray.

The passage also teaches us the importance of perseverance.

Daniel did not stop praying simply because he had not yet received an answer. He continued seeking God faithfully until the answer came.

His example reminds us not to give up when answers seem delayed. God’s timing is perfect, and His purposes are often greater than what we can see or understand at the moment.

This passage also reveals that there are different levels of authority within the spiritual realm. Just as there are ranks and positions of authority in the natural world, Scripture shows that there are different spiritual beings with different levels of responsibility and authority.

This helps us understand why the angel spoke about the spirit prince of Persia and why Michael came to assist him.

However, above every spiritual power and authority stands God Himself. Nothing can stop His plans or prevent His purposes from being accomplished.

As believers, we do not need to live in fear. Instead, we can place our trust in God, knowing that He hears the prayers of His children and remains sovereign over every situation.

Daniel’s experience reminds us to remain humble, continue praying, trust God’s timing, and believe that He is working even when we cannot yet see the answer.

Part 5: Why Some Prayers Seem Delayed

Daniel’s experience helped me understand something that many believers struggle with when it comes to prayer.

Sometimes people become discouraged when they do not receive an immediate answer from God. They begin to complain, grow impatient, lose faith, or even blame God for not responding to their prayers.

However, there are important truths that we need to understand.

First, God has a will.

Not every prayer reaches heaven simply because we ask for it. The things we pray for must align with God’s will and with what He has revealed in His Word. That is why it is so important for us to know the Scriptures and understand what God desires.

If what we are praying for does not align with His will, we should not expect God to fulfill it.

Second, God looks at the condition of our hearts.

Before Daniel received an answer, he humbled himself before God. The angel specifically told him that his prayer had been heard from the very first day because he humbled himself and sought understanding before the Lord.

Humility matters.

God desires hearts that are surrendered to Him. When we come before Him in humility, we acknowledge that His ways are higher than ours and that His will is more important than our own desires.

This is one of the reasons humility is so precious in the sight of God.

Another lesson we learn from this passage is that there may be things happening in the spiritual realm that we cannot see.

Daniel’s prayer was heard immediately, yet the answer was delayed because of spiritual opposition. While Daniel continued praying on earth, a battle was taking place behind the scenes.

Daniel’s experience reminds us that there are realities beyond what we can see with our natural eyes.

Many people become frustrated because they only see what is happening in front of them. They do not realize that God may already be working in ways they cannot yet understand.

Because of this, we must continue trusting God even when the answer has not yet arrived.

2 CORINTHIANS 2:15 (NLT)

Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing.

God knows those who belong to Him. Through Christ, our lives become a pleasing fragrance before Him.

When our prayers align with God’s will, we do not need to live in constant worry about when or how the answer will come. Instead, we can trust Him and continue growing in our relationship with Him. While we wait, we can keep seeking God, loving Him, and walking with Him, knowing that our lives are pleasing to Him through Christ.

As we continue walking with God, seeking Him, and praying according to His will, we can trust that He hears us.

Most importantly, we must remember that God’s Word never fails.

ISAIAH 55:11 (NLT)

It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.

Every promise that comes from God will accomplish what He intends. His Word will not return empty.

For this reason, we should not lose heart when answers seem delayed.

If our prayers align with God’s will, we can continue to trust Him and wait patiently for His perfect timing.

God is faithful.

He sees what we cannot see, knows what we do not know, and works according to His perfect wisdom.

Even when we do not understand what is happening, we can rest in the confidence that God remains in control and that His timing is always best.

Part 6: Trusting God’s Timing and Remaining Faithful

One thing God has taught me through these experiences is that His timing is always perfect.

There may be seasons when we do not immediately see the answers to our prayers. There may be moments when we feel discouraged, confused, or tempted to question whether God has heard us.

Yet throughout Scripture, we are reminded that God is faithful.

What He has spoken, He will accomplish.

What He has promised, He will fulfill.

Even when we cannot see what is happening behind the scenes, God is still at work.

If you are reading this and you have been waiting for an answer to prayer, remember that God has a will and a purpose for every situation. Continue seeking Him, continue trusting Him, and continue aligning your prayers with His Word.

Do not allow disappointment, doubt, or impatience to pull you away from God.

Instead, place your faith in Him.

There are times when God protects us from things we do not understand. There are also times when He delays an answer because He is working according to His perfect plan.

Whatever the reason may be, we can trust that God’s heart toward His children is always good.

If God has rescued you from difficult situations, delivered you from temptation, protected your life, or given you another opportunity to turn back to Him, do not take that grace for granted.

The fact that you are still here today is evidence of His mercy.

God loves you deeply, and as long as you are alive, there is still an opportunity to know Him, walk with Him, and fulfill the purpose He has prepared for your life.

Our decisions matter because they shape the direction of our lives.

If you have prayers that remain unanswered, do not lose hope. Instead, examine your heart before God. Ask Him to align your desires with His will and trust that He knows what is best.

Most importantly, continue to have faith.

MATTHEW 17:20 (NLT)

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

Jesus taught that even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains.

MARK 11:22–25 (NLT)

22 Then Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God. 23 I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. 24 I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. 25 But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.”

Faith is not simply believing that God exists. Faith is trusting Him even when we cannot yet see the outcome.

When we pray according to God’s will, walk in obedience, forgive others, and place our confidence in Him, we can rest in the assurance that He hears us.

No promise from God will ever fail.

No word that proceeds from His mouth will return empty.

His timing is perfect, His plans are good, and His faithfulness never changes.

No matter what season you may be facing, continue trusting God.

He is faithful yesterday, today, and forever.

Final Reflection

As I look back on everything God has taught me, I am reminded that prayer is far more powerful than many of us realize.

Prayer is not just a religious activity or a routine we perform. It is a privilege that allows us to communicate with God, seek His will, and partner with Him through faith.

Throughout my journey, God has shown me that our prayers matter.

He taught me the importance of praying according to His will. He revealed the value of humility, faith, discernment, and perseverance. He also opened my eyes to the reality that there are things taking place in the spiritual realm that we cannot always see with our natural eyes.

There were moments when God corrected me, moments when He revealed truth to me, and moments when He allowed me to witness His power and faithfulness firsthand.

Through these experiences, I learned that God is always at work, even when we do not immediately see it.

I also came to understand how important it is to have a personal relationship with Him.

Without God, it is easy to be deceived, confused, and led in the wrong direction. However, through the Holy Spirit, God guides us, reveals truth to us, and helps us walk according to His will.

Everything I have shared in this testimony is ultimately meant to point people back to God.

My desire is not for people to focus on me, but to see God’s faithfulness, goodness, mercy, and power.

If there is one thing I hope you take away from this testimony, it is this:

Seek God wholeheartedly.

Spend time with Him.

Know His Word.

Pray according to His will.

Trust His timing.

Walk by faith.

And allow the Holy Spirit to guide your life.

No matter what you may be facing today, God sees you, He hears your prayers, and He knows exactly what you need.

Continue seeking Him, continue trusting Him, and never stop believing that He is working—even when you cannot yet see it.

To God alone be all the glory.

Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness, Your guidance, Your protection, and Your unfailing love.

Hallelujah!
