What It Truly Means to Be Born Again: From Spiritual Death to New Life in Christ

Introduction

I have been amazed by the things God has shown me throughout my journey with Him.

There is a great difference between simply reading about something and having God personally reveal it to you and help you understand it through the Holy Spirit.

As God continued teaching me, He opened my eyes to spiritual truths that I had never fully understood before. He helped me see the reality of the spiritual battle taking place around us, the importance of having a genuine relationship with Him, and what it truly means to be born again.

Many people hear the phrase “Born Again” and immediately think about religion, traditions, denominations, or religious practices. However, God showed me that being born again is far deeper than that. It is about being brought from spiritual death into new life through Jesus Christ.

This is what God has been teaching me.

Part 1: God Opened My Eyes to the Spiritual Battle

God showed me that there is a spiritual battle taking place every day between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan.

Although many people are unaware of it because it cannot be seen with natural eyes, the battle is real. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, believers can begin to understand and recognize spiritual realities that are invisible to the physical eye.

As God revealed these things to me, I began to understand why He established different ministries within the Church.

Part 2: Why God Gave the Five-Fold Ministry

God helped me understand why He gave the five-fold ministry to the Church: Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors (Shepherds), and Teachers.

Their purpose is to help believers grow in faith, mature in their knowledge of God, remain united in Christ, and avoid being deceived by false teachings.

EPHESIANS 4:11–16 (NLT)

11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

When God showed me a glimpse of the spiritual realm, it reminded me of a game I played as a child.

There were two teams, each with its own territory. Players would enter the opposing territory to capture members of the other team. Those who were captured would be held until their teammates rescued them. The team that eventually captured everyone won the game.

In many ways, the spiritual battle is similar.

God uses people to help bring others to salvation. But once a person accepts Jesus Christ, Satan immediately seeks to draw that person back under his influence.

Those who are still immature in their relationship with God can be vulnerable to deception because the enemy often works through people to influence and mislead them.

Satan is very cunning. Sometimes his deception can sound so convincing that it appears spiritual or even truthful.

This is why believers must continue growing in spiritual maturity.

For example, someone may say, “Why did you change your religion? You should stay with what you have always known.”

Others may offer opportunities, benefits, or incentives to persuade someone to turn away from what God is doing in their life.

Satan often twists God’s truth. Instead of focusing on a personal relationship with God, he shifts the focus toward religion, traditions, and human expectations.

In this way, many people become trapped and prevented from moving forward in their walk with Christ.

Part 3: The Real Meaning of Being Born Again

The truth is that being born again has always been about our relationship with God.

When Adam and Eve sinned, humanity’s connection with God was broken. Sin created spiritual separation between God and mankind.

As a result, humanity became spiritually dead.

Although God is always present, His holiness means that sinful humanity cannot approach Him apart from the salvation He has provided.

This is one reason many people feel distant from God or believe He is absent.

Yet because of His great love and mercy, God sent Jesus Christ into the world to save sinners.

When a person accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and fully surrenders to Him, Jesus baptizes that person with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit then comes to dwell within them.

Many people focus only on the outward changes they see in someone who becomes a Christian. When they hear the term “Born Again,” they often associate it with religion, traditions, rituals, doctrines, or religious practices.

Because of this misunderstanding, some people become fearful when they hear the phrase.

Others assume that born-again believers are somehow perfect or unusually holy.

But being born again is not about religion.

It is about receiving new spiritual life through Jesus Christ.

When someone accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and receives the Holy Spirit, that person becomes a new creation. Their spirit, once spiritually dead, is made alive.

This is what Jesus meant when He spoke about being born again.

JOHN 3:3–8 (NLT)

3 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

4 “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

5 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. 7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

Part 4: Spiritual Growth Is a Process

When a person is born again, God begins a work of transformation within them through the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit gradually changes their heart, mindset, perspective, understanding, and desires so they become more aligned with God’s will.

As this transformation takes place, it becomes visible through their words, actions, attitudes, and way of life.

However, spiritual growth is not instant.

Just as physical growth takes time, spiritual growth also takes time.

Our relationship with God develops in stages. We begin as spiritual infants and gradually mature as we continue walking with Him.

Part 5: Growing from Spiritual Milk to Spiritual Maturity

New believers need spiritual nourishment so that their faith and understanding can grow.

Just as babies need milk to grow physically, believers need the nourishment of God’s Word to grow spiritually.

1 PETER 2:2 (NLT)

Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment,

Because spiritual growth is a process, we should not compare ourselves with other believers or place unrealistic expectations on those who are still growing.

Jesus Christ alone is perfect, and He is the One we follow.

Every born-again believer is under the teaching of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit teaches, corrects, guides, and reminds us of God’s truth.

Rather than focusing on titles or outward appearances, we should ask:

Do they truly have a relationship with Jesus Christ?

Have they fully surrendered their lives to God?

Is the Holy Spirit transforming them daily?

Can the fruit of their faith be seen through love, humility, obedience, and a transformed life?

As believers continue to grow, there comes a time when they need deeper spiritual understanding and stronger spiritual nourishment.

This enables them to develop discernment and recognize the difference between truth and deception.

HEBREWS 5:13–14 (NLT)

13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

Part 6: Following God’s Path Through Christ

God also showed me how important it is to have a relationship with Him so we can recognize the path He wants us to follow.

When people travel, they need directions to reach their destination.

Without a clear route, they can become lost and end up heading in the wrong direction.

The same is true spiritually.

Without a relationship with God, people can be led away from truth and toward paths that take them farther from Him.

Jesus Christ is the way to our destination, and the Word of God serves as our guide.

Through Scripture, God directs our steps and keeps us from losing our way.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

PSALM 119:105 (NLT)

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

JOHN 14:6 (NLT)

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

Part 7: God’s Desire Is to Save People

God also showed me that hell was created for Satan and his demons.

It was never God’s desire for humanity to end up there.

God desires all people to be saved and reconciled to Him.

However, He has also given every person the freedom to choose.

His love is never forced.

Satan seeks to draw people away from God, but the Lord continually calls people back to Himself through His love and mercy.

If you are reading this today, I believe God is reaching out to you.

Like the lost sheep that the Good Shepherd seeks, God knows you, loves you, and desires to bring you closer to Him.

The Lord is not asking for perfection.

He is asking for your heart.

If you are willing to come to Him and receive Jesus Christ, He will teach you, transform you, guide you, and lead you in His ways.

PSALM 32:8 (NLT)

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.

ISAIAH 30:21 (NLT)

Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.

Final Reflection

Looking back on what God has shown me, I have come to understand that being born again is not about joining a religion, following traditions, or performing religious rituals.

It is about being restored to a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Through Christ, those who were once spiritually dead can be made spiritually alive.

Through the Holy Spirit, God transforms believers day by day, teaching them, correcting them, and helping them grow in faith and spiritual maturity.

This journey of transformation is not instant, but it is evidence that God is actively working in the lives of those who belong to Him.

My prayer is that every person would come to know Jesus Christ personally, experience the life-changing work of the Holy Spirit, and walk daily in the relationship God originally intended for us to have with Him.

A Prayer of Salvation:

If you are ready to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can pray this prayer:

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a humble heart. I know that I am a sinner, and I need Your forgiveness. Thank You for loving me and for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for my sins and rise again.

Jesus, I believe in You. I believe that You are the Son of God, my Lord and Savior. Today, I open my heart and invite You into my life. Please forgive my sins, cleanse me, and make me new.

Come into my heart, Lord Jesus. Guide me, change me, and help me follow You all the days of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and teach me to walk in Your truth, love, and grace.

Thank You for saving me and for giving me eternal life. From this day forward, I belong to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
